Galactica season finale given extra 30 minutes

The finale for season two of space opera expanded to a 90-minute blowout.

This election day, President Roslin will have 30 extra minutes to sway voters against the villainous Baltar on Battlestar Galactica. The Sci-Fi Network has announced that the season-two finale of the acclaimed sci-fi drama, airing Friday, March 10, will be expanded from one hour to 90 minutes.

Battlestar Galactica is a remake of the 1970s sci-fi series about a human race whose homeworld is destroyed by evil robots called Cylons. The last of the humans escape death by fleeing in a ragtag band of spaceships, which are led by the sole remaining warship, the Battlestar Galactica, and begin a search for the mythical planet Earth.

In the current series' storyline, human President Roslin (Mary McDonell) is attempting to stave off the political ambitions of Baltar (James Callis), whom she is convinced is a Cylon collaborator. Admiral Adama (Edward James Olmos), commander of the Galactica, and Roslin must decide on whether to abandon the search for Earth when they find a habitable planet--which, to their unwelcome surprise, the Cylons have found first.

Science fiction fans will be getting a mega-dose of action that night: the Galactica closer airs at 10:00 p.m., following the season finales of two other Sci-Fi series, Stargate SG-1 at 8 p.m. and Stargate: Atlantis at 9 p.m. Production on season three of Galactica will begin in April in Vancouver, with former Xena star Lucy Lawless joining the show.
