Goodbye my friend

We've known you for the better part of 15 years i think. I still remember the day Mum found you. We were outside, in the garden. I think i was trying to kill some ants, or was i playing badminton. Mum was doing her normal gardening. Then i heard her calling us frantically, to come see some dog, You.

You were under a car, that was parked right infront of our neighbours house. You looked scared, but brave. You even growled at us as we tried to feed you. You never left us since, until tonight.

It was hard to let you go. A part of me thought you would live forever, or at least as long as me. You never looked your age. In human years, you'd be more than 100 years old! And still you looked as cute as a puppy.

Sometimes i wished i was a kid, least things like this wouldnt hurt so much, eh?

I wonder if i'll ever love a dog as much as i loved you. Sappy, i know. But its true. There was something about you that made you so loveable by all. In fact, you weren't just a dog to us. You were one of us, a member of the family.

Sometimes you were too human, which was irritating at times. Like how you had 'selective' hearing. And how you could unlock the side gate latch with your nose to get out. And how you always wanted to be with everyone in the house whenever we had any guests at home.

You weren't a Lassie or anything. You certainly didnt save us from snakes or wolves. But what you did do, was giving us 15 years of joy and love. Its hard to imagine what my family's life would have been without you.

I think i'll miss you the most when i come back from work. I'll miss not having you walk right up to my car door when i'm coming out. I'll miss touching that nose and petting that face. I'll miss you trying to open the door and get into the house before me.

Goodbye Butch. Goodbye my friend. Say hi to Mum.
