I knew it was coming, but it was still sad to hear that Hamann is leaving Liverpool. Its almost like the day Fowler left Liverpool all those years ago.
Those who don't follow football much, would probably think, "Who da frack is Hamboy?"
It shows how well he does his job, if he is a virtual unknown. Destined never to be as high profile as a Beckham, or a Ronaldinho, but to those who watch and study the game, and appreciate the game, Hamann is a colossus of a player.
Hamann personifies ruthless German efficiency at its best. He plays in that unglamourous holding midfielder role, breaks up opposition play, and allows others to roam free and wild. It is a testament to the player, that many agree that the turning point of the Champions League final was when Hamann came on at half time, at which point Liverpool were already losing 3-0.
The effect of bringing Hamann on is now legendary. He completely nullified the dangerous plays of Kaka (who was on fire in the first half), and allowed other players like Gerrard, Alonso and Smicer to roam forward and tie the game.
In the FA Cup final, he did the same thing.
Poetry in Motion...sort of..
Watching Hamann go about his business isnt very pretty, but it is very interesting. At his peak, he was considered one of the best in the business, even Real Madrid wanted him to replace Makelele. Its almost like some twisted poetry, how he glides around the pitch with his gangly limbs, and never seems to have to run at full pace to tackle anyone.
He will be missed. I think i'll go get a Liverpool jersey with his name embroided across the back.
