You can imagine my shock when i read about this Indian temple in KL that had been demolished. Not only that, the bulldozers came while people were still praying inside, got everyone out, then started their demolition derby while the people watched and cried and tried to stop all of it.
As i was searching the net regarding this, and was shocked to discover more cases of this, and many blogs and sites about this, and as of this moment, i havent found any Malaysian newspaper sites that have articles about this issue. How 'NOT' suprising...
1. From ducky's blog:
"this one of the idiotcy of this country that i cannot understand. historical buildings that promote british colonial style will be demolish and be replace by sub-standard building of no historical value. its surprising they didnt tear down that temple when they built mid valley, its somehow still there, and very oddly place. my guess its days are numbered as well."
2. From sandeeps blog:
"The papers have carried the news faithfully but no outraged voices have been raised as expected. Good for Malaysia which is fast on the route to becoming another Pakistan or Saudi Arabia, the land of the “pure” that can’t stand diversity"
3. From usj.com.my , about a temple in Section 11, Shah Alam that was to be demolished yesterday
Apparently, in this case, there was a huge outcry, massive petitions and stuff by the indian community. And MIC did shit. How 'NOT' suprising as well. Also, there was a notice sent, by the local council, announcing that they were gonna demolish it. Suprise surpise, after a few days, the local council totally denies it was going to demolish the temple, saying it was a misunderstanding and that they just wanted to demolish the perimeter concrete wall that was erected without proper approval.
Yea, right, if that is what they wanted to do, they could have easily have stated it in the notice. People are not dumb.
4. Here's a link to policwatchmalaysia:
Its actually, a copy of a formal complaint letter sent to our prime minister about the demolishment of the SRI AYANAR SATHISHWARY ALAYAM temple. Not sure when this happened.
5. From Bolehtak blog:
"In a nation that’s supposed to be an example of multi-racial & multi-religious tolerance and moderation, as frequently self-acclaimed by our ministers, and one just coming up to its 50th anniversary of independence, one would have thought a 100-year of Hindu temple in our country would have merited national heritage listing. Instead it was demolished against the cries of appeals by Hindu devotees."
6. Here's the Malaysiakini article (you need to be registered to view it).
7. From KTemoc's blog:
"About 3 weeks ago, 40 DBKL personnel went to the temple armed with rotans and smashed up the temple deities. After digging a hole to dump the destroyed images into, they buried the whole lot. The Hindu devotees have all been distressed and complained of the insulting action against their faith. They also noted that jewellery belonging to the temple had gone missing.
It's one thing to demolish a building whether it's a temple or some other shelter, but it's another to deliberately smash icons of worship with rotans. Such deliberate violent behaviour bespeaks an attitude of religious intolerance and racial hatred. That action had exceeded all bounds of decency and should be resoundingly condemned."
8. An article on Outlookindia.com
A friend who is active in Keadilan, told my bro, that it better for us to leave the country. Things arent improving. I'm sick to the core. I think my friend is right.
