Well there, i've decided to share some information that will hopefully benefit all ye home users that no less than jack shit about protecting your computer from getting fucked by :

• virus
• spyware
• adware
• trojans
• the neighbours dog

Defense in Depth

This basically means protecting yourself using not one, but a multitude of tools and technology. On my home computer, i have installed 4 key software (all FREE by the way) to keep my comp safe and protected.

1. Zone Alarm

Been using this freeware software FIREWALL for years now, and i've been very happy with it. Takes roughly about 1/2 hour to fully master this software. The interfaces are very quick and simple and everything is explained in a clear language. So why do you need a firewall? The firewall basically blocks intrusive connections coming from outside, while allowing normal traffic outgoing traffic like web browsing, email and instant messaging (yahooIM, MSN Messenger) to exit. It is also helpful if your computer has been infected by something and requests to send data out of your computer. Your firewall can stop these connections which sometimes may be sending information about whats in your computer.

The website has a free online spyware scanner too, so if you think your computer is compromised, you can head straight away there to get it scanned.

2. AVG AntiVirus

A must in any computer these days is an anti-virus program. The free version isnt ALL THAT as compared to say Norton or Trend Micro anti-virus programs, but having some is better than none. Very important to keep updating every week or so!

3. Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta

Unlike most things Microsoft, this particular tool is freeware (at least for now). They didnt actually develop it, but took over a company called Giant. Cool interface and user friendly.

4. Spybot Search & Destroy

A long time favourite of mine. All thought the interface hasnt particularly changed a lot, it is still one of the better spyware/adware detectors out there. I recently read an article that using the Giant (now know as Microsoft Anti-Spyware) software and Spybot together has the highest percentage of detecting spyware/adware in your computer as compared to any other combination.

Download the shit, and install it for your peace of mind. I'll even lend you any help if you face problems with em programs. Please bear in mind, that even installing and using these software in no way guarentees your computer will be safe forever. All the hard work of updating and scanning regularly, will be flushed down the toilet if you download an email containing an attachment telling you you've won a hundred gazillion dollars and the money is all yours by simply opening the attachment and installing the program on your desktop. Dumbass.
